Configuring Embedded Audio Capture
Set up embedded HDMI/SDI audio capture, audio routing, and mixing with external audio sources.
The Solution
Magewell devices capture embedded HDMI/SDI audio alongside video. Configure audio routing in your capture software to mix embedded and external audio sources.
Step-by-Step Instructions
HDMI carries up to 8 channels of embedded audio automatically
SDI carries up to 16 channels of embedded audio
In OBS: Audio source appears with your Video Capture Device
Configure audio: Right-click source > Properties > Audio Output Mode
Select 'Capture Audio Only' or 'Output Desktop Audio'
Mix embedded audio with external mic in Audio Mixer
Set audio levels: Peaks should hit -12dB to -6dB (yellow zone)
For separate audio: Use external audio interface + Magewell video-only
Advanced: USB Capture Utility > Audio tab for sample rate and channel config
Pro Tips
- HDMI audio supports PCM stereo, 5.1, and 7.1 surround
- Some sources have separate settings for HDMI audio output
- Camera HDMI audio quality varies - external recorder may be better
- Use Audio Monitoring in OBS to hear captured audio in real-time
