The Magewell Pro Capture Dual SDI provides two independent SDI capture channels on a single low-profile x4 PCIe card. At £400, it is the natural choice for broadcast workflows that require simultaneous ingest from two SDI sources without the complexity, slot consumption, or added cost of installing two separate capture cards in the same machine.
Each channel has its own dedicated FPGA processor. This is not a single processing unit shared between two inputs. Both channels operate independently: different SDI formats, different frame rates, different embedded audio configurations, all running simultaneously without one affecting the other. A 3G-SDI 1080p60 source on channel one and an HD-SDI 1080i50 source on channel two run in full parallel with no compromise on either. Format detection is automatic per channel, covering SD-SDI, HD-SDI, and 3G-SDI on both inputs.
The most common reason to choose a dual-channel card over two separate single cards is slot economy in dense rackmount servers. But there are also workflow-level reasons that make two channels on a single card the right design choice for specific productions:
Both channels appear as separate capture devices in production software. vMix recognises each channel as an independent input, assignable to different camera layers, mix buses, or recording outputs within the same session. Wirecast, OBS Studio, Adobe Premiere Pro, and FFmpeg all handle dual-device access in the same way. Each channel is a separate device in your OS, which means your software sees two SDI capture devices rather than one dual-channel device, keeping integration straightforward.
The card runs on Windows 10, 11, and Windows Server (driver required), Linux 3.x and later via V4L2 without an additional driver, and macOS 10.14 and later via the MWCapture SDK. The 24/7 duty cycle rating makes it appropriate for permanent broadcast infrastructure and ingest systems rather than occasional production use.
The Pro Capture SDI at £215 is the right choice if you genuinely only need one SDI channel now and that is unlikely to change. The Dual SDI at £400 costs the same per channel but requires a wider x4 PCIe slot. If there is any realistic possibility your workflow will need a second SDI input in the coming year, the Dual SDI is the more practical purchase now. Adding a second card later means consuming an additional PCIe slot, an additional bracket, and an additional set of cables. If your chassis has limited slots, that second slot may not be available when you need it. For four simultaneous SDI channels, the Pro Capture Quad SDI provides that on the same card size.
