Capture Device Showing Wrong Resolution or Aspect Ratio
Fix incorrect resolution, stretched, cropped, or wrong aspect ratio in captured video.
The Problem
Captured video appears stretched, squashed, cropped, or at the wrong resolution compared to source.
The Solution
Configure custom EDID to request correct resolution from source, and adjust canvas/output resolution in capture software to match.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Check source device output resolution in its settings menu
Open USB Capture Utility and verify detected resolution
If wrong: Set Custom EDID to your desired resolution (e.g., 1920x1080)
Reconnect source after EDID change
In OBS: Set Canvas Resolution to match source (Settings > Video)
Right-click your capture source > Transform > Fit to Screen
For aspect ratio issues: Source settings > Resolution Type > Custom > Set correct values
Check for letterboxing/pillarboxing - indicates resolution mismatch
Pro Tips
- Most common fix: Set custom EDID to 1920x1080 60fps
- 4:3 sources (VGA, old cameras) will have pillarboxing on 16:9 canvas - this is normal
- Some cameras output 2048x1080 (DCI 2K) - crop or scale to 1920x1080 for standard workflows
- USB Capture Utility shows exact detected resolution and refresh rate
