Troubleshooting

Fixing Color Accuracy and Color Space Issues

Troubleshoot washed-out colors, incorrect color space, and RGB/YUV conversion problems in video capture.

The Problem

Captured video looks washed out, oversaturated, or colors appear incorrect compared to source. Black levels are crushed or grays look milky.

The Solution

Configure correct color space (RGB vs YUV), set color range (Limited vs Full), and adjust capture software color settings.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Check your source output color space: Settings > Display > RGB or YUV

2

Most sources use YUV (4:2:2 or 4:2:0) for HDMI output

3

In USB Capture Utility: Check 'Color Space' setting matches your source

4

In OBS: Right-click source > Filters > Add 'Color Correction'

5

Adjust: Gamma (brightness), Contrast, Saturation

6

Common fix for washed-out: Increase Contrast to 1.2-1.3

7

For crushed blacks: Adjust Gamma upward (1.1-1.2)

8

Check Color Range: Limited (16-235) vs Full (0-255)

9

Most cameras/consoles use Limited range - set capture software to match

10

For professional color: Use 10-bit color devices (4K Plus, SDI Pro)

11

Use Waveform/Vectorscope in vMix or DaVinci Resolve to analyze color scientifically

Pro Tips

  • Default settings work for 95% of users - only adjust if you see problems
  • Match color space between source and capture software
  • Professional colorists use calibrated monitors - consumer monitors vary widely
  • HDR content requires HDR-capable capture (4K Plus with HDR support)
  • Test with color bars or known reference image to verify accuracy
