Fixing Interlaced Video and Combing Artifacts

Remove interlacing combing artifacts and enable proper deinterlacing for smooth video playback.

The Problem

Video shows horizontal jagged lines (combing) especially during motion. Image looks like horizontal blinds or scan lines.

The Solution

Enable deinterlacing in your capture software. Modern devices should capture progressive video (1080p, not 1080i).

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Check source output: Ensure camera/console is set to progressive (1080p, 720p) not interlaced (1080i)

2

Consoles: Video Settings > Output > Select 1080p (not 1080i or Auto)

3

Cameras: Video Format > Progressive (not Interlaced)

4

In OBS: Right-click video source > Filters > Add 'Deinterlacing'

5

Deinterlacing Method: Select 'Yadif 2x' for best quality

6

In vMix: Input Settings > Deinterlacing > Select 'Bob'

7

For editing: Adobe Premiere > Sequence Settings > Fields > Upper or Lower First

8

For already-recorded interlaced video: Use video editing software to deinterlace in post

9

HandBrake: Filters > Deinterlace > Yadif (best quality) or Decomb (faster)

Pro Tips

  • Modern sources should output progressive - interlacing is legacy TV standard
  • 1080p60 is better than 1080i60 (60 full frames vs 60 half-frames)
  • If source only outputs 1080i, must deinterlace in capture software
  • Deinterlacing adds processing overhead - use progressive sources when possible
  • Professional broadcast still uses interlacing - SDI captures handle this well
