Setting Up Magewell Capture on Linux

Linux installation and configuration guide for Magewell USB Capture devices. V4L2 compatibility for Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS.

The Solution

Magewell devices work natively with Linux via V4L2 (Video4Linux2). Install the Linux SDK for advanced features and application development.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Connect your Magewell device to a USB 3.0 port

2

Linux kernel will automatically load V4L2 drivers

3

Verify device detection: run `ls /dev/video*` in terminal

4

Your Magewell device will appear as /dev/video0 (or video1, video2, etc.)

5

Test with: `v4l2-ctl --device=/dev/video0 --all`

6

Use with OBS: Launch OBS, add Video Capture Device (V4L2), select /dev/video0

7

For SDK: Download Linux SDK from Magewell website

8

Extract and run: `sudo ./install.sh`

9

SDK includes V4L2 drivers, capture API, and sample applications

Pro Tips

  • Supported on Ubuntu 20.04+, Debian, CentOS, and most modern distributions
  • Requires kernel 2.6.35 or later (4.15+ recommended for best performance)
  • Works on x86, x64, and ARM architectures (including Raspberry Pi 4)
  • Use `v4l2-ctl` for command-line capture and device configuration
  • Compatible with FFmpeg, GStreamer, and all V4L2-compatible applications
