Troubleshooting Multiple Capture Device Conflicts

Fix device conflicts, bandwidth issues, and synchronization problems when using multiple Magewell devices simultaneously.

The Problem

When using multiple Magewell devices, you experience conflicts, only one device works, or performance degrades significantly.

The Solution

Distribute devices across separate USB controllers, configure unique device names, and manage bandwidth allocation properly.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Open Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers

2

Identify different USB controllers (each controller is independent)

3

Connect each capture device to ports on separate USB controllers

4

Calculate bandwidth: Each 1080p60 device uses ~250MB/s

5

USB 3.0 controller limit: ~400MB/s (fits one 1080p60 device comfortably)

6

USB 3.1 Gen 2 controller: ~1000MB/s (fits multiple 1080p60 or one 4K60)

7

In capture software: Rename each device clearly (Camera 1, Camera 2, etc.)

8

OBS: Right-click source > Rename

9

Ensure each device has unique resolution/framerate to avoid conflicts

10

For 3+ devices: Install PCIe USB 3.1 expansion card for additional controllers

11

Recommended expansion card: Inateck or StarTech 4-port USB 3.1 Gen 2 PCIe card

12

Test devices one at a time first, then add second, then third

Pro Tips

  • Front and rear USB ports often share controllers - check Device Manager
  • Each USB controller operates independently - key to multi-device setups
  • Thunderbolt docks provide excellent multi-device support
  • For professional multi-cam: Consider dedicated USB controllers per device
  • Label your USB cables/ports so you know which device is which
